#4 Butler Soccer improves to 6-1-1, 3-0 in KJCCC, with a 6-0 win against Neosho Sunday afternoon.

The Grizzlies came into Sunday rested and ready to play after a week off from competition. Hungry for another conference win, Butler played with pride in front of a large home crowd. Stephanie Bonilla (Garland TX) put the Grizzlies ahead early scoring her first goal of the season off a pass from Aisling Dyer (Ireland). Bonilla’s goal was followed by a finish from Perla Hernandez (Great Bend KS). The scoring play started when Alyssa Miller (Thornton CO) penetrated into the penalty box going one vs. one with the Neosho goalkeeper. When Miller and the keeper got tangled at the top of the box, Hernandez found the ball and slipped it away into the empty net. Butler continued to breakdown Neosho’s defense, but the score would remain 2-0 at half.

The second half saw a flood of goals from the Grizzlies. Carla Daniels (Jamaica) put the first second half points on the board when she got her head on a cross from Abi Schnetzler (Overland Park KS). Just ten minutes later Aisling Kerr (Ireland) found the back of the net for her first time this season. Her shot came off a poor clearance by Neosho that she was able to drop in over the goalkeepers head. Another Irish national lit the score board five minutes later. Outside back, Mandi Roan (Dallas TX), played a ball ahead to Miller who found Dyer streaking in on the far post. Dyer laced the ball home putting the Grizzlies up 5-0. The final goal of the game came off a cross from Abby Ponce (Oxnard, CA) who found Miller in the box. Miller’s goal made her the games point leader with one goal and two assists.

Despite the 6-0 win, the Butler defense played a hard game. Neosho’s high pressure offense forced the Grizzlies defense to play quickly out of the back. The team met the challenge well allowing only 4 shots and posting another conference shut out. Mel Neuseen (Emporia KS) played 90 minutes in goal brining her season total to nearly 500 minutes with only 2 goals against.

Butler will look to continue their winning streak this Friday as they take on conference rival Johnson County in a rematch of last year’s semifinal match up. Johnson, who is also undefeated in conference this season, will travel to Butler. Kickoff is set for 4:00 PM.

Butler Grizzlies (4-1-1) took home their first Jayhawk Conference win of the season last night defeating the Cowley County Tigers 4-0.

The Grizzlies dominated the attack from the first whistle sending in 6 shots (2 off the cross bar) within in the first 7 minutes of the game. Abby Ponce (Oxnard CA) finally found the back of the net in the 10th minute to put Butler up 1-0. Ponce’s goal game after Natausha Sanchez (Dodge City KS) played a ball down the flank to fellow sophomore Perla Hernandez (Great Bend KS) who flighted a pass across the 6 yard box. Ponce, who has been big in the air all year, got her head on the ball slipping it passed the keeper. The Grizzlies would continue to press for the rest of the half, but to no avail. At half time the score would remain in Butler’s favor 1-0 after 18 shots 12 of which were on goal.

Heading into the second half, Butler prepared for a challenge. Cowley would not be easily beat on their home turf, but the Grizzlies would prevail. 16 minutes into the second half, Butler struck again off a penalty kick. The foul occurred when Ponce was brought down in the box after penetrating the Tiger’s backline. Aisling Dyer (Ireland), who had already laced several free kicks in the game, stepped up to take the shoot and placed past Cowley’s keeper. The 2-0 lead changed the momentum of the game and the Grizzlies looked hungry for more.

Butler solidified the lead with a goal from Freshman Kaila Sneath (Hutchinson KS) with 20 minutes left in the game. Sneath made a slashing run into the box and was rewarded with a cross from Hernandez who tallied her second assist of the night. Hernandez was played the ball by holding midfielder Casie Greenlee (Valley Center KS) who minutes earlier rattled a shot off the crossbar. With 7 minutes left in the game, Butler found the net for the fourth and final time. The game winner was scored by Alyssa Miller (Thornton Co) off long penetrating pass from center back Kayla Weakly (Wichita KS).

Despite a young backline, Butler recorded another shutout (their fourth of the season). Mel Nuessen (Emporia KS) played 90 scoreless minutes in the goal for the Grizzlies making 5 saves. Cowley’s goal keeper had a tough night, but kept her team in the game making 21 saves on the night.

The Grizzlies will look to continue to remain undefeated in conference play when they travel to Coffeeville Sunday at 7:00 PM.

SOCCER: Butler suffers 1st loss but improves in rankings to #4

Butler Soccer (3-1-1) suffered their first loss of the season Sunday afternoon in a 3-2 game against #2 Tyler Junior College in Dallas TX.

On a windy Richland College field, the Grizzlies had a tough challenge to face playing a 2010 national finalist. Tyler took full advantage of the wind at their backs early in the game and netted the first two goals. The first strike came at the 7 minute mark from Katie Miller. The second goal was scored 15 minutes later by Bianca Norman off a pass from Staci Murray. The Grizzlies did not hang their heads and found the back of the net off a corner kick from Steph Bonilla (Garland TX). Bonilla's corner was taken out of the air by Natausha Sanchez (Dodge City KS) and headed back to Perla Hernandez (Great Bend KS) who put in the back of the net. Less then 5 minutes later Butler had the chance to equalize off a cross from Bonilla, but Alyssa Miller (Thornton CO) barely missed sending her header over the cross bar. The score would remain 2-1 until the half with Butler putting up 3 shots to Tyler's 7.

The Grizzlies came out in the second half with the wind at their backs. In the first 5 minutes, Megan Snyder (Overland Park KS) cranked a shot that went off the cross bar. The team celebrated the thought to be goal as the referee called it off. The game would continue at 2-1 with Butler controlling the majority of the play.

As the end neared, Butler pushed numbers forward. Despite the offensive effort, Tyler found the back of the goal with only 5 minutes left int he game to make it 3-1. Butler was not ready to give in. With only 15 seconds left in the game, Aisling Dyer (Ireland) put a free kick in the side netting to take the final score to 3-2. The hard fought physical game did not end in the Grizzlies favor, but not for lack of effort or perseverance.

The Grizzly defense was anchored by Dyer for the first 77 minutes of the game. Dyer left the goal with 8 saves and 2 goals against. Mel Nuessen (Emporia KS) replaced Dyer late in the second half to give Butler an offensive advantage with her long punts. Nuessen made one save with one goal against.

The Grizzlies returned home from their road trip without a win, but their trip was well worth it. Playing quality teams to close games helped them improve their national ranking from #11 to #4 a new Butler Soccer record. The team will look to continue their top-notch season this Thursday as they open KJCCC play against Cowley Community College in Arkansas City at 7:00 PM.
