MEN'S SOCCER WELCOMES TWO TRANSFERS FOR 2012 SEASON

  • Posted February 06, 2012

The 2011 America East champion Stony Brook men's soccer team has added two talented transfer student-athletes to its roster for the spring semester, head coach Ryan Anatol announced Thursday. Joining the Seawolves in 2012 are Ryan Price, from Florida Gulf Coast, and Shane Wixted from South Florida. Both players have two years of eligibility remaining.

"We are very excited to welcome Ryan and Shane to our program," Anatol said. "Both are talented student-athletes and have very good experience. They have the ability to make an impact on this program next season and help continue to raise the level of Stony Brook Men's Soccer for the future."

Price, a 6'0, 175-pound forward and native of Melbourne Beach, Fla., appeared in 29 career games at Florida Gulf Coast, helping the Eagles win back-to-back Atlantic Sun regular season championships and the 2011 Atlantic Sun Tournament championship, which earned them a berth into the NCAA Tournament. In 2010, Price and the Eagles were not eligible to compete for the conference title due to NCAA reclassifying regulations.

Price contributed six goals and two assists in his Florida Gulf Coast career. He was a unanimous selection to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshmen team and a Goal.com National All-Freshmen team selection in 2010.

Before Florida Gulf Coast, Price was a four-year letterman and senior captain at Melbourne High School, leading his team to back-to-back Florida State championships (2009-10). He was the 2010 Space Coast Player of the Year after scoring 83 points on 33 goals and 17 assists. He also was a Gatorade Player of the Year nominee.

Wixted, a 5'11, 150-pound midfielder and native of Melbourne Beach, Fla., played in 21 career games at South Florida, helping the Bulls to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments.

Wixted, who has one career goal, is reuniting with Anatol, who was an assistant coach at USF when he was a freshman.

Prior to USF, Wixted played at Seminole High School, leading his team to the Florida State 5A Championship game in 2009. He was voted the MVP of the Hillsborough County vs. Pinellas County Senior All-Star Game in 2010.

The pair will join 16 returning letterwinners from last season's team that captured the program's third America East Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. In Anatol's first season as head coach, the Seawolves were 10-6-4.

STONY BROOK GARNERS END OF SEASON AWARDS

Juniors Berian Gobeil Cruz and Leonardo Fernandes headline four Stony Brook men's soccer student-athletes to earn season honors from America East, the conference announced Thursday. Gobeil Cruz was named the America East Striker of the Year and Fernandes was named the America East Midfielder of the Year for the second consecutive season.

Gobeil Cruz and Fernandes were both named first-team All-America East, as was senior captain defender Kyle McTurk (Hauppauge, N.Y.). Freshman Keith McKenna (Great River, N.Y.) was named to the All-Rookie team.

Gobeil Cruz, Stony Brook's first-ever Striker of the Year, led the Seawolves and America East in goals scored during the regular season, tallying seven, including four during conference play. He had three game-winning goals and added two assists, one of which helped score the game-winning goal. For the junior forward, this is his second All-Conference honor. He was second-team All-America East as a freshman in 2009.

Fernandes repeats as Midfielder of the Year after putting up another solid campaign. He led the Seawolves in points with 17 after scoring six goals and assisting on five. He helped account for 46 percent of Stony Brook's 24 goals this season. He is tied for second in America East in total points and also ranks in the top five in goals and assists. Fernandes has now won a major conference honor in each of his three seasons, having also been named America East Rookie of the Year in 2009.

McTurk earns his first-ever All-America East honor, providing the Seawolves outstanding defense. He played every minute of every game this season and was part of four Seawolves shutouts. On multiple occasions this season, McTurk helped the team not allow a shot on goal for entire halves. For his career, McTurk has been a part of 22 Seawolves shutouts.

McKenna appeared in 12 games for the Seawolves, most of any freshman on the team. He totaled seven shot attempts, including three that were on goal.

STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY CAPTURES AMERICA EAST CHAMPIONSHIP!!

Stony Brook wins their second conference championship in three years with a 4-2 victory over the Hartford Hawks to advance to the NCAA Tournament!!

Junior Leonardo Fernandes scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the Stony Brook men's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over Hartford to win the 2011 America East Championship and earn the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. It is Stony Brook's third conference championship, joining the 2005 and 2009 teams.

Fernandes was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, and he joins senior Kyle McTurk (Hauppauge, N.Y.), junior Kyle Schlesinger (Selden, N.Y.) and sophomore Will Casey (Setauket, N.Y.) on the All-Tournament team. Fernandes' five point night breaks the America East Championship record, and his eight points in the tournament ties the conference record.

The Seawolves will now await their first-round opponent in the NCAA Tournament, which takes place on Thursday, Nov. 17. The selection show takes place Monday at 4:30 p.m. exclusively on NCAA.com.

"It's all about the journey and all about getting better," head coach Ryan Anatol said. "Tonight it paid off. We're going to enjoy this championship tonight and then prepare ourselves for the NCAA Tournament."

Casey got the Seawolves off on the right foot just 3:29 into the match as Fernandes smacked a free kick into the box. The ball found its way to senior Mame Samb (Dakar, Senegal), and he kicked it to Casey who got a clear shot at the goal and put it past Hartford's Luke Citriniti.

Hartford responded with a goal in the 17th minute when David Bernhardsson was fouled just outside the box. His free kick sailed into the top left corner of the goal on the far side from 30 yards out to tie the match.

Just before halftime, Stony Brook regained the advantage as Fernandes took a played ball from junior Raphael Abreu (New York, N.Y.) and easily put the ball into the net from the middle of the field. Stony Brook went into halftime up 2-1.

Just 4:33 into the second half, Fernandes gave the Seawolves a two-goal cushion when a played ball in the box caused a collision that knocked down Citriniti. Junior Berian Gobeil Cruz (Montreal, Quebec) played the ball to Fernandes, who had an open net from the far side. He sailed the kick across into the back of the net on the near side for his second tally of the night.

Stony Brook went up 4-1 when Schlesinger took a long pass from junior Christian Molinar (Bay Shore, N.Y.), outran his defender and went one-on-one with the goalkeeper and pushed it past him.

Hartford scored a goal late, but the Seawolves defense held the Hawks to just five shots on goal for the night.
