SAINTS MEN’S LACROSSE ANNOUNCES CAPTAINS FOR 2014 SEASON
BOSTON, Mass. – Head Coach Brendan McWilliams announced the captains for the 2014 Emmanuel College Men's Lacrosse Team. The Saints, who will be competing in their third season of varsity competition will be captained by one senior, two juniors and a sophomore. The four captains, Brian O'Regan (Milton, Mass.), Jake Jaskolski (St. Clair Shores, Mich.), Austin Lauzier (Bedford, N.H.), Pat Heffernan (Pembroke, Mass.) were elected by votes from their teammates and coaching staff, with additional input from athletic administrators and training staff.
The Saints went 7-10 during the 2013 campaign with a 4-5 mark in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play. With two of their ten losses coming in overtime and all five GNAC setbacks by just a single goal last season, the Saints are looking forward to what promises to be an exciting 2014 season.
O'Regan, one of just two seniors on the young Saints squad, served as captain for Emmanuel's club men's lacrosse team in 2011. O'Regan was instrumental in helping the team transition to varsity status for the program's 2012 NCAA debut. He has since captained both varsity campaigns and will be serving as one of the team captains for the fourth consecutive season this spring. "It is an honor and privilege to have been elected captain for a forth consecutive year," commented O'Regan. "I have been fortunate to see the program evolve into what it is today. The coaches and captains have worked hard to transform the team into a well-respected program. There is a lot of youth and talent on this team and our goals expand every day."
Despite the youth on the squad, the Saints notched the program's first post-season tournament win last year, advancing to the GNAC semifinals after a 9-8 quarterfinal win at Saint Joseph's College. Heffernan, who earned 1st Team All-GNAC selection last year as a rookie expressed consistent expectations echoed by his fellow captains. "We want to see the work we have put in throughout the fall, pay off in the spring."
All four captains expressed gratitude in being elected to their leadership roles. "Its a great honor. We have a lot of great leaders in our locker room this year " stated two-time team captain Jaskolski.
Joining O'Regan and Jaskolski is Austin Lauzier, a two-year starter in goal for the Saints. "I am happy that I have teammates that feel as if they can look up to me as a leader on and off the field."
With an increasingly competitive 2014 schedule the Saints will certainly have their work cut out for them this coming season. Head Coach Brendan McWilliams sees his team sharpening its focus. "Our immediate goal is to continue to become an increasingly competitive program, and as a team to collectively take the necessary steps to achieve that goal. Our captains are the right men to help lead our program through the off season and into the 2014 season."
The Saints are slated to play a 15-game season, opening up with non-conference action versus Keuka College on March 1. Emmanuel will then travel across the river to take on MIT on March 5, before heading south to Myrtle Beach for games with Kean and Hilbert over spring break
Looking forward to the team returning to campus and a great fall ball season here in Boston MA.
