DeMarco takes over Kenyon field hockey program
GAMBIER, Ohio (March 20, 2012) Peter Smith, Kenyon College's Director of Athletics, Fitness, and Recreation, announced Tuesday that Jacque DeMarco was hired as the Ladies field hockey coach. DeMarco, a former assistant at Ball State University, takes over for Chrissy Needham who departed after two seasons and a combined 17-22 record.
"Kenyon field hockey has a great tradition of success. The program has recently been in a transition period and I am happy to add some stability," DeMarco said. "Chrissy has done a great job and I am excited to build with the current team, which I think has a great foundation in place."
One of DeMarco's first moves as the Ladies head coach will be to address that young foundation.
"It will be critical to solidify the incoming class as well as reach out to younger prospective student-athletes," she explained. "Player development will be another important step. In the non-traditional season I will be able to focus on improving the skill sets of each student-athlete in order to be well prepared for competition in the fall."
DeMarco, a native of Hudson, Ohio, began her coaching career as a head goalie coach in the USA Field Hockey Futures program, a position she held for four years. In 2007, she added assistant coaching duties at Hartwick College to her resume. She spent two seasons there and helped develop multiple players who went on to earn all-conference and all-region honors.
In 2009, DeMarco left Hartwick for an assistant position at SUNY Cortland, where, with her assistance, the Dragons posted a 19-1 record and earned a No. 5 national ranking. Following that remarkable run, DeMarco moved on to Ball State. Once there, she worked primarily with the team's goalkeepers and helped the NCAA Division I Cardinals collect ten wins in the past two seasons.
During her own playing days, DeMarco was a four-year starting goalie for Colgate University and a two-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year. In her senior season, the two-time Raiders team captain finished No. 2 in the country in saves, earned first team all-league honors, and second team all-region honors.
DeMarco graduated from Colgate in 2007 with degrees in sociology and religion. In 2011, she earned her master's degree in sport management from Cortland.
"I'm eager to get started here," DeMarco added. "I'm drawn to Kenyon's strong sense of community, as well as its location. It is an elite liberal arts college with a Midwest feel. Kenyon is very unique and I am honored to be the next field hockey coach."
Happy New Year from Kenyon College Field Hockey!
