Ladies set to tackle another transition

GAMBIER, Ohio (August 30, 2011) A year after going through a successful transition under head coach Chrissy Needham, the Kenyon College field hockey team now faces another major change for the 2011 season. As Needham enters year two with the Ladies, she'll try to rework the team's nucleus, one that will have to compensate for the loss of eight players from the 2010 roster.
With the changing of seasons, the Ladies are now caught in the midst of a youth movement. The team's 2011 roster is void of seniors and comprised of 85 percent freshmen and sophomores. While the challenge ahead is daunting, Needham and the returning members of the team have already proven they can overcome adversity. During Needham's 2010 coaching transition, the Ladies put together a respectable 10-11 record and even earned the No. 3 seed in the North Coast Athletic Conference's (NCAC) postseason tournament.
In order to get back to that point, or even surpass it, the Ladies will need to lean on juniors Rebecca Spradlin (San Jose, CA/Prospect) and Leah Jacques (Wayland, MA/Wayland) for production and leadership. Spradlin will spearhead a defensive unit that pitched five shutouts and a 2.00 goals against average last season. Jacques, a midfielder, will see plenty of touches as she continues her role of playmaker. She chalked up one goal and three assists last season and will certainly be looking to bump up those numbers in 2011.
In addition to Spradlin, the defense welcomes back sophomores Susie Gurzenda (Somerset, PA/St. Andrew's School) and Alex Bair (Darien, CT/Darien). Gurzenda earned valuable experience playing in all 21 games last season, while Bair was injured for part of the season, but still managed seven starts. Backing them up once again will be sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Carney-Knisely (South Burlington, VT/Rice Memorial), who started every game as a freshman, made 123 saves, and posted a .741 saves percentage.
Up top, sophomores Stephanie Ladman (Worthington, OH/Columbus School for Girls) and Annie Hulkower (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephens & St. Agnes) will have to lead a slew of first-year players in attacking the opponent's net. Ladman notched two goals and two assists last season, while Hulkower found the cage five times.
The new-look Ladies will take on competition beginning September 3rd on the road against Centre College. A week later, they'll play their first home game against NCAC newcomer DePauw University.

Mike Evans, a principal at Norfolk, Va., design firm Hanbury Evans Wright Vlattas + Company, says to be beautiful a campus must have a "signature campus space as a carrier of the campus brand." At Kenyon College, that space is "Middle Path," a 10-foot-wide footpath that serves as the Gothic hilltop campus' central artery. More than just a trail, it's a village green for the tight-knit campus community. Sergei Lobanov-Rostovsky, who teaches 17th-century poetry at Kenyon, says the college, both isolated and pastoral, is "a small place to think big thoughts."
