Sand Sharks End Regular Season With Loss To Eagles

    10/21/2012

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort women's soccer team closed out the regular season Sunday with a 5-0 loss at No. 7 Embry-Riddle, which clinched the Sun Conference North Division title.

The Sand Sharks (9-9, 4-5 Sun Conference) now wait to learn their seed an first-round opponent in the Sun Conference tournament, which begins Nov. 1.

USCB managed just four shots against the strong Eagles defense.

Krizzy Menez scored a pair of goals for Embry-Riddle, and Valerie Obita added a goal and two assists.

The Eagles (13-4, 8-1) took a quick 1-0 lead on Ange Durston-Ryan's goal in the fourth minute, and Obita added a goal in the 29th minute for a 2-0 advantage.

That's where it stayed until Menez scored two goals in a three-minute span in the second half. Brianna Zangara capped the scoring in the 86th minute.

USCB goalkeeper Chelsie Mummert made seven saves.

The Sand Sharks will be either the No. 6 or No. 7 seed in the conference tournament and will open the postseason on the road Nov. 1, at SCAD Savannah or St. Thomas.

Sand Sharks' Win Streak Snapped At Thomas

USCB Clinches Spot In Sun Conference Tourney

    Justin Jarrett
    10/19/2012

THOMASVILLE, Ga. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort women's soccer team saw its three-game win streak come to an end Friday with a 7-0 loss at Thomas, but the Sand Sharks also clinched a spot in the Sun Conference tournament by virtue of Florida Memorial's loss to Northwood.

USCB (9-8, 4-4 Sun Conference) can finish no worse than eighth in the conference. The top eight qualify for the tournament; the winner of the conference championship game will earn an automatic berth in the NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship tournament, while the remaining seven teams will play in the conference tournament beginning Nov. 1.

The Sand Sharks had a chance to finish as high as sixth with a win Friday, but the Night Hawks (8-6-1, 3-4) took control from the start. USCB's scoreless streak — which was at 279 minutes entering the game — ended in the second minute, when Jodi Wright scored the first of her three goals. Wright added a second goal in the 12th minute for a 2-0 halftime lead.

USCB was unable to mount much of an attack, and Thomas scored a flurry of four goals in a 12-minute span of the second half to put it away.

The Sand Sharks complete the regular season at 1 p.m. Sunday at Embry-Riddle.

Sand Sharks Notch Third Straight Shutout, 4-0 At Ave Maria

    Justin Jarrett
    10/13/2012

AVE MARIA, Fla. — Maddie Zak scored a pair of goals and fellow freshmen Olivia Dizon and Marissa Hamm added a goal apiece as the University of South Carolina Beaufort women's soccer team blanked host Ave Maria 4-0 on Saturday to move closer to securing a spot in the Sun Conference tournament.

USCB's back line was dominant, as goalkeeper Chelsie Mummert needed only two saves to notch her third consecutive shutout. The Sand Sharks (9-7, 4-3 Sun Conference) have won three straight games for the first time in the program's two-year history, and they are two games above .500 for the first time.

The Sand Sharks needed some time to settle in and adjust to playing in extremely windy conditions, but once USCB became comfortable, the goals came quickly. In the 31st minute, junior Alexa Muffley played a ball to a streaking Dizon, who put a perfectly placed shot over the keeper to the back post for a 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes into the second half, sophomore Erin Lynn sent a pass to Marissa Hamm, who put a low shot past the goalie for her third goal in three games.

Zak added the last two goals, streaking past the defense for an unassisted score in the 54th minute and adding the final goal five minutes later with a header off a free kick from Kathleen Kent.

The win concluded a successful weekend road trip for the Sand Sharks, who also won at Southeastern on Thursday. USCB has 12 points, which is good for fifth place in the current Sun Conference standings. The top seven teams qualify for the postseason.

"Our team has done a tremendous job this year of focusing and taking care of business," USCB coach Ed Heberling said. "I am proud of our girls this weekend to be coming home with two big wins."

USCB makes another road trip next weekend, playing at Thomas at 3 p.m. Friday and wrapping up the regular season at 1 p.m. on Oct. 21 at Embry-Riddle.

Sand Sharks Blank Fire For Key Sun Conference Win

    Justin Jarrett
    10/11/2012

LAKELAND, Fla. — Marissa Hamm scored the game's only goal on a penalty kick in the 75th minute and Chelsie Mummert made seven saves in her second consecutive shutout, as the visiting University of South Carolina Beaufort women's soccer team beat Southeastern 1-0 on Thursday night.

The Sand Sharks (8-7, 3-3 Sun Conference) weren't at their sharpest from the outset after a six-hour bus ride Thursday morning, but they settled in quickly and found a rhythm. USCB's back line and Mummert controlled the game until the Sand Sharks finally got their break in the 75th minute.

Maddie Zak made a run up the left flank and sent a ball to Erin Lynn in the upper corner of the penalty box. Lynn turned to the middle and was clipped from behind for a penalty, and Hamm delivered a shot into the side netting for her second penalty-kick goal in two games.

Mummert and USCB's defenders made the goal stand up, finishing their fourth shutout of the season. Karleigh Smoak made eight saves for Southeastern (6-6, 3-4).

"After the goal, our team took it to the second level to secure the win," USCB coach Ed Heberling said. "We're starting to see our ladies mature and learn how to win close games. I am extremely proud of this group of girls and their resilience, effort, enthusiasm and commitment to our program."

The win puts the Sand Sharks above .500 for the first time in the program's two-year history and keeps them in good position to earn a spot in the Sun Conference tournament. USCB faces another key game for its playoff hopes when it travels to face Ave Maria at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Sand Sharks Blank Johnson & Wales 3-0 On Senior Day
    Justin Jarrett
    10/7/2012

BLUFFTON, S.C. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort women's soccer team made the final regular-season home game for its four seniors a memorable one, blanking Johnson & Wales 3-0 in a key Sun Conference game Sunday at Fin Land Field.

The Sand Sharks (7-7, 2-3 Sun Conference) scored on penalty kicks by Stephanie Moldenhauer and Marissa Hamm and added a beautiful goal on Alexa Muffley's header off a Becca Kent corner kick to close their home schedule with a key victory for their hopes of qualifying for the Sun Conference tournament.

Goalkeeper Chelsie Mummert was brilliant for the Sand Sharks, stopping all eight of shots on goal by Johnson & Wales (3-6, 1-5) for her third shutout.

Moldenhauer opened the scoring in the 37th minute, when she was awarded a penalty kick after the Wildcats were whistled for a foul in the box. The sophomore put away the penalty for her fourth goal of the season and her career, making her USCB's single-season and all-time goal leader. Lauren Cornett held both marks after scoring three goals last season.

The Sand Sharks padded the margin in the 69th minute, as Hamm converted a penalty kick after the Wildcats were called for a handball in the box.

USCB dismissed any controversy over the two penalties in the 81st minute, when Kent sent a corner into the box for Muffley, who put it away with a header for her third goal of the year.

Kent was one of four USCB seniors honored at halftime of their final regular-season home game. Her sisters — Kathleen Kent and Blair Kent — also were honored, along with Soledad Bucaram.

"Yet again, our team showed tremendous resilience in bouncing back after a tough loss," coach Ed Heberling said. "The team stepped up and played a great game for our four seniors in their last home game. This will be a great game for us to build from as we hit the road for two more big conference games this weekend."

The Sand Sharks travel to Florida to face Southeastern (6-5, 3-3) at 7 p.m. Friday and take on Ave Maria (2-7, 0-5) at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Sand Sharks Hang On For First Sun Conference Victory

    Justin Jarrett
    9/30/2012

BLUFFTON, S.C. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort women's soccer team doesn't make a practice of soaking coach Ed Heberling with the water bucket after every win, but this one was special. The Sand Sharks earned the first Sun Conference victory in the program's brief history Sunday, holding off visiting Warner for a 3-2 win at Fin Land Field.

Freshmen Maddie Zak and Jessica Tooley scored first-half goals, and sophomore Alexa Muffley added a goal in the second half for USCB (6-6, 1-2 Sun Conference), which held off a late flurry from the Royals (2-7, 1-3) to get back to .500.

"It's great to get that first conference victory," Heberling said. "We made it closer than we needed to, but we were able to hang on. We're still learning how to win, and with time the team will understand how to put games away."

The Sand Sharks didn't take long to get their attack going, as Claire Kennedy played a long through ball that set up Zak's goal in the seventh minute. Zak ran down the ball up the left side and cut inside, blistering a shot inside the right post. Tooley added her third goal of the season just six minutes later for a 2-0 lead.

USCB added to the lead in the 58th minute, as Kathleen Kent played a corner kick into the box, where Muffley caught it with her right foot for her second goal of the year.

The Royals didn't go quietly. Warner got on the board in the 61st minute, when Lindsey McCabe converted a penalty kick. The Royals pulled within 3-2 in the 84th minute, as Amber Smith scored off a corner kick from Victoria Allen. Smith and USCB goalkeeper Chelsie Mummert collided going for the ball, and Mummert was unable to gain control before Smith punched in her third goal of the season.

The one-goal margin made for some tense moments down the stretch, but Mummert was able to make three more saves — she had a total of 11 — including a great stop on a one-on-one blast from Naybet Febo.

"We've now bounced back from two disappointing losses with wins, so I'm excited for our resilience and ability to learn and implement what we've learned in the next match," Heberling said. "As we continue to grow and understand, we will continue to make improvements and add more firsts for our young program."

The Sand Sharks will try to even their record in the conference when they host No. 19 Northwood at 4 p.m. Friday at Fin Land Field.

Sand Sharks Fall 4-1 To Warriors On Homecoming

    Justin Jarrett
    9/28/2012

BLUFFTON, S.C. — The inaugural fall Homecoming at the University of South Carolina Beaufort did not go as planned for the Sand Shark women's soccer team, as USCB fell behind early and was unable to rebound in a 4-1 loss to Webber International in a Sun Conference contest Friday at Fin Land Field.

Looking for their first-ever Sun Conference victory, the Sand Sharks (5-6, 0-2 Sun Conference) got off to a rocky start when the Warriors scored off a set piece in the ninth minute. After a corner kick produced a flurry of activity in front of the goal, Ciera Abundez was able to pounce on a rebound off the crossbar for the game's first goal.

USCB kept it close until the 32nd minute, when the Warriors (5-1, 3-0) scored twice in a span of 20 seconds. Aubrie Strohmenger scored off an assist from Ashley Palmer for a 2-0 lead, and Palmer blasted a shot from 30 yards just a few seconds later to make it 3-0.

The Sand Sharks were able to regain some momentum going into halftime when Jessica Tooley rocketed a free kick into the upper-left corner from 25 yards for her second goal of the season.

USCB did a better job of winning 50-50 balls in the second half and was able to generate several scoring chances that could have put the Sand Sharks right back in the game, but none panned out.

The Warriors put it away when Abundez scored her second goal of the evening off a beautiful cross from Alexis Garrand in the 78th minute.

"I think this was a little bit of a wake-up call for our players about what it means to play in the Sun Conference," USCB coach Ed Heberling said. "You have to bring your best every night in this league, or you won't compete. The last time we played this poorly, we bounced back and had three of our best games of the year. We need to do that again starting Sunday."

The Sand Sharks host Warner for another Sun Conference game at 1 p.m. Sunday at Fin Land Field.
