SPARTANS FINISH SPRING SEASON WITH ALUMNI GAME & TAILGATE
Castleton, VT – The Castleton State College men’s soccer team completed its’ 2014 non-traditional season with the 2nd Annual Alumni game and tailgate luncheon on Saturday May 3rd at 9:30 am at Spartan Stadium.
“We were so excited to have the alumni back on campus in what has proved to be a fun and competitive game. Last year the young boy’s had to come from behind to win so they know the alums come ready to relive the glory days” said head coach John O’Connor. “Our alumni and the current players look forward to this so with the addition of our parents supporting us its’ a win, win situation for us all.”
It was a perfect morning for soccer and the alumni fielded a young and experienced team. It became a seesaw battle with the alums going up 1-0 on a Bill Lundy laser beam just inside the post past the young boy’s diving goalkeeper Jake Walker (Ludlow, VT). The varisty Spartans began to control the game and drew even at 1-1 but that would not be the end of the scoring.
In the second half Lundy stuck again, this time with a rebound that rolled slowly along the ground inside his favorite right post past Dan Palker (Westford, VT). The present day Spartans drew even again but the alums worked away, huffing and puffing to find the game winner with just 10 minutes remaining from newly annointed alumni John Kendall who once again was in the right place at the right time as he had been his entire senior year. Alumni keepers Andy LaCroix and Nate Koenemann combined for the win.
Alumni Squad: Gabe Bicker, Trevor Chapman, Sean Fitzgerald, Dom Heller, Nick Johnas, John Kendall, Nate Koeneman, Trevor Kotrady, Andy LaCroix, Tanner LeCuyer, Nick Lingardo, Bill Lundy, Justin Rose, Jake Roswell, Drazen Smith, Dillon Zaengle.
Following the game there was a tailgate luncheon for over 80 alumni, friends and family at the Spartan Stadium which included former Spartan legend John Werner and his wife Judy. After some thanks to the parents and alumni, Coach John O’Connor presented Bill Lundy with the Alumni MVP award from a vote of the present Castleton players.
Preceding alumni weekend the Spartans competed in their NCAA sanctioned “Play Day” on Saturday April 26th with three scrimmages. In the morning University of Vermont club team was supposed to visit Spartan stadium but failed to show. So, the team played a 70 minute intrasquad game with the red team winning 2-1. In the late afternoon Castleton hosted a round robin tournament with local NAC foe Green Mountain College and Plattsburgh FC U18’s coached by Plattsburg State coach Chris Waterbury. The Spartans stayed perfect on the afternoon beating PFC 2-1 and GMC 4-2.
The Spartans open up the 2014 fall campaign on Friday August 29th when they host Eastern Connecticut State University at 4:00 pm at Spartan Stadium.
