The Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen Softball team has advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association Region V West Softball Tournament for the second time in the schools twelve year history. The first time that the Lady Plainsmen qualified for the tournament was in 2011 when now assistant coach Kiana Levy was pitching for FPC.

The Lady Plainsmen have done well this season winning the most games in the programs history going 15-38 overall and 10-18 in conference also breaking the schools mark for conference wins in a season. This season has marked a great turn around in the program.

“The first year that I was here as the assistant coach we were competitive and were able to get into the region tournament for the first time in history”, said Coach Lucas Grider, “the next season we missed it by one game in my first year as the head coach and then last year was the anomaly. My predecessor helped change the culture of this program and I have continued to bring in student-athletes who want to see Frank Phillips College Softball compete for a Regional Title and a National Title. I am very proud of what these young ladies have accomplished this season and look forward to coaching them throughout the region tournament.”

The softball team has also already broken several school records in statistical categories as well. They have set a new record for batter’s being hit by pitch (26), sacrifice hits (65), and stolen bases (99). They also will break the record for games played and pitched this season with a minimum of 53 games. They could also break team records for innings pitched by the pitching staff, walks and on base percentage by the hitters and fielding percentage by the defense.
Individually the Lady Plainsmen will have players crack the top five in statistical categories as well. Tori Amaya has broken the stolen base record stealing 26 bases so far this season, which is not only a Frank Phillips College record but is tops in the Conference this year as well. Austin Murillo and Kendra Sinclair are tied for second with Coach Levy (2011) for wins in a season with six and are only one behind Cheyenne Ford (7 – 2012).

The Lady Plainsmen will face Midland College in their first game at the Regional Tournament on May 2nd. The scheduled start time for that game is 3:00 PM. The Region V West Tournament is being held in Lubbock, TX on the Campus of Texas Tech University. The game is being webcast through PSBlive.com as well as all of the Region V Tournament games.

Shania Leon commits to Frank Phillips College

Shania Leon (Broomfield, CO) committed to play with the Frank Phillips College softball team this week. Shania is a pitcher/outfielder, who graduated and played her high school ball at Legacy High School. This year Legacy own the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 5A state title for the sixth time in seven years. Leon's RBI single in the forth of the championship game sparked a four fun inning giving Legacy a lead that it would not relinquish en route to a 6-4 victory. Shania is the second student-athlete in two years to come to FPC off winning a high school state championship joining Des'ree Wainright; who came to FPC off a UIL 4A state championship with Buda Hays High School. At FPC Shania brings with her a winning tradition, she will compete for time in the pitcher's circle and the outfield while providing a strong bat to the FPC lineup. Shania earned all-conference and honorable mention all regions honors this past season while earning a crystal ball award for being a clutch hitter.
